Peace With God

(recorded by Acoustic Conversations)

I lost the last bit of my innocence
When I was only thirty years
It cost me ninety-three bucks, sixty cents
Price of a shotgun and a beer
She didn’t want my house or my picket fence
Those weren’t the words I longed to hear
So I shot her in her living room
And buried her in her backyard
Then it was straight to the priest I went
Where I made my peace with God

‘Bout ten years back I saw the president
And he was speakin ’bout the war
What he said was really makin’ sense
He said what are you waiting for
Well, thanks to the Department of Defense
My Mama would be poor no more
So I shot them bastards one by one
And after one, it’s not that hard
And then back home, straight to the priest I went
Where I made my peace with God

A Friday night and daddy’s drunk again
Nothin’ new but worse this time
You’d never guess that i was only ten
The way I stared straight in his eyes
Well, Mama assured it was just self-defense
When I pulled that trigger tight
We watched him dying in our living room
And we buried him in our backyard
Then it was straight to the priest we went
Where we made our peace with God
Then it was straight to the priest we went
Where we made our peace with God
